HISTORICAL CONTEXT
A The Bureau evolved from simple portable boxes with sloping lids used by writers in the Middle Ages. Towards the third quarter of the seventeenth century this form of the desk appears to have been made on a stand as well. While these Bureaus were initially on turned legs, in due course they followed fashion and were raised on cabrioles.
